Sultry Noir in the Dead of Winter at the Parkway Theater
Starting tonight at the Parkway Theater is another entertaining selection of some delightful Film Noirs. Take-Up Productions which has been responsible for the previous series including: The Richard Widmark showcase this past summer, Screwball Comedies and an earlier Film Noir series featuring “Gilda” with Rita Hayworth has put together another 5-film series that showcases L.A. noir at its finest.
Kicking things off tonight, 7:30p.m. sharp!, is the marvelous Billy Wilder classic, “Sunset Boulevard” that features a tour-de-force performance from Gloria Swanson as the silent movie star diva, that has seen her best days behind her. But give credit to William Holden matching Swanson’s own performance as the broke writer, Joe Gillis, who finds salvation in Swanson’s palace, until he soon figures out that he has become her own stange “love-object”. The film was up for 13 Oscars in 1950, winning three Oscars including: Best Screenplay. This is a great chance to see this classic on the big screen and better yet, go to the concessions counter, grab yourself a drink and hold on tight and witness one of the most memorable “close-ups” in film history.
The series continues every Monday at the Parkway thru Jan. 5. Other titles in the series are: Michael Curtiz’s underrated Joan Crawford film “Mildred Pierce“; Roman Polanski & Robert Towne’s 70’s masterpiece, “Chinatown“; the best neo-noir since Lawrence Kasdan’s early 80’s film, ”Body Heat”, and one of the best films of the 90’s, Curtis Hanson’s “L.A. Confidential” and closing the series, Shane Black’s silly if flawed entry, “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” which does feature another outstanding performace from Robert Downey Jr.
